Preparation Guidelines

No Preparation Is Required For The Following:

  • MUSCULOSKELETAL ULTRASOUND
  • THYROID/NECK ULTRASOUND
  • DOPPLER/VASCULAR ULTRASOUND
  • BREAST ULTRASOUND

General X-Ray

There is no preparation for X-Rays, HOWEVER, if there is a possibility that you may be pregnant, please contact your physician to discuss prior to the X-Ray and be sure that they document the known possibility of pregnancy on their order.

Abdomen Ultrasound

No eating, drinking, smoking or gum chewing for 8 hours prior to appointment.

Abdomen/Pelvic Ultrasound

No eating or drinking 8 hours prior to appointment EXCEPT that the patient must start drink 34 oz or 3-4 glasses of water 1½ hour prior to appointment and finish it 1 hour before the appointment.

Do Not Empty Bladder Before Examination.

Pelvic And/Or Obstetrical Ultrasound

Drink 34 oz or 3-4 glasses of water 1½ hour prior to appointment and finish it 1 hour before the appointment. You may eat regularly.

Do Not Empty Bladder Before Examination.

A transvaginal study may also be required (unless contraindicated), which involves the insertion of the ultrasound probe into the vagina for optimal visualization of the pelvic structures. The bladder will be emptied for this portion of the examination.

Male Pelvic Ultrasound

Drink 34 oz or 3-4 glasses of water 1½ hour prior to appointment and finish it 1 hour before the appointment. You may eat regularly.

Do Not Empty Bladder Before Examination.

Prostate (Trans-Rectal) Ultrasound

Fleet enema 2 hours before the examination (kit may be purchased at a pharmacy)

OR

Dulcolax suppository 2 hours prior to examination.

Patient must also drink 34 oz or 3-4 glasses of water 1½ hour prior to appointment and finish it 1 hour before the appointment.

Do Not Empty Bladder Before Examination.

Mammography

After showering, avoid using any powders or deodorants as it may show up on your Mammogram.

Suggestion to wear a 2-piece outfit for your comfort.

Bone Mineral Density

No contrast or radioactive exams at least 2 weeks prior to appointment. Appointment should not be booked within 2 weeks (can be 1 week if necessary, in some cases) of having any X-Ray exams involving contrast agents or having had a Nuclear Medicine examination.

** On the day of your BMD, DO NOT take calcium supplements or Iron Tablets. If you do, we will not be able to complete your appointment and you will be required to re-schedule your exam to another day.
